Sri Lanka in November: weather, where to go and what to wear

November is Sri Lanka's stormy changeover month. Where it rains, where it's clearing, and what to pack for the coast, the hills, the temples and Poya day.

November is the month Sri Lanka changes seasons. The southwest monsoon is long gone, the northeast monsoon has not fully arrived, and in between sits what the Department of Meteorology calls the second inter-monsoon: warm, heavy thunderstorms that can reach any part of the island, usually building in the afternoon. It is not a washout, and it is not beach weather everywhere either. Pack for heat, rain and one cold night in the hills, and dress for a temple visit on the full moon.

In short

  • Expect rain somewhere every day, mostly as afternoon and evening downpours. Mornings are often clear, so plan sightseeing early.
  • The south coast (Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa) improves through the month and is the best beach bet by late November. The east coast is going into its rainy season.
  • Wear loose, quick-drying cotton or linen on the coast, add a fleece and a rain jacket for Kandy, Ella and Nuwara Eliya.
  • Temples want shoulders and knees covered and shoes and hats off. Il Full Moon Poya falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026, when temples are busiest and alcohol sales stop.

What the weather is really like in November

Sri Lanka's year has four seasons, not two. The Department of Meteorology divides it into the first inter-monsoon (March–April), the southwest monsoon (May–September), the second inter-monsoon (October–November) and the northeast monsoon (December–February). The second inter-monsoon is the wettest stretch for much of the island, because the rain is not tied to one coast: thunderstorms form over the land in the afternoon heat and can break almost anywhere.

In practice a November day often starts bright and humid, clouds stack up after lunch, and a short, heavy downpour arrives in the afternoon or evening. Colombo averages around 300 mm of rain in the month, which sounds alarming but mostly falls in these bursts. You lose some afternoons. You rarely lose whole days. Late in the month the northeast monsoon starts to settle in over the north and east, while the south and west begin to dry out ahead of their December–March high season.

Temperatures barely move. The lowlands sit at around 30°C by day and 23°C at night with high humidity, and the sea stays at a bath-warm 28°C. The hill country is the exception: Nuwara Eliya, at nearly 1,900 m, sees days of around 20°C and nights of around 11–12°C, and it is often misty and damp.

Where to go in November

If you are travelling early in the month, build the trip around the hill country and the Cultural Triangle, where rain is a nuisance rather than a deal-breaker. Climb Sigiriya or walk Polonnaruwa as soon as they open, take the Kandy–Ella train (the scenery is at its greenest), and keep afternoons for tea estates, cafés and covered sights such as the Dambulla cave temples.

From mid to late November, finish on the south coast. The sea is calming, the crowds and peak prices of December have not arrived, and whale-watching boats from Mirissa generally restart around now, with the best sightings from December to April. Leave the east coast for its own dry season, roughly April to September.

On the coast and in the cities

Heat and humidity matter more than rain. Loose cotton, linen and lightweight quick-dry fabrics are the answer; denim and polyester will feel miserable and never dry. A downpour at 30°C is warm, so most people simply get wet and dry off. A compact umbrella, which is what Sri Lankans use, is more comfortable than a rain jacket at sea level, and it doubles as shade.

  • Loose shirts and T-shirts in cotton or linen, plus one long-sleeved shirt for sun and mosquitoes at dusk.
  • Light trousers or a midi or maxi skirt: cool, and they already meet temple rules.
  • Sandals with grip that you don't mind soaking. Streets flood briefly after storms.
  • Swimwear for the beach only. Cover up with a shirt or sarong in town, shops and guesthouse restaurants.

In the hill country

Kandy is just a little cooler than the coast, but Ella and especially Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains are properly chilly at night and at dawn. A mid-weight fleece or jumper and a breathable waterproof jacket earn their space. Wear closed shoes with grip for World's End, Little Adam's Peak and wet tea-estate paths.

Temple dress code in November

Sri Lanka's Buddhist sites, from the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy to the cave temples at Dambulla and the stupas of Anuradhapura, share the same basic rules. Cover your shoulders and knees, take off your shoes and hat before you enter the temple grounds, and walk around stupas clockwise. Visitors in shorts or sleeveless tops can be refused entry at the Temple of the Tooth, so carry a sarong or scarf if you are dressed for the heat. White or light colours are traditional and especially appropriate on Poya days.

  • Bare feet are the norm. In November temple stone is more often wet and slippery than hot, so walk carefully on steps.
  • Never pose for a photo with your back to a Buddha statue, and never touch or climb on one. The UK Foreign Office travel advice warns that mistreating Buddhist images is a serious offence and that tourists have been convicted.
  • Cover any tattoo of the Buddha. Visitors with visible Buddha tattoos have in the past been refused entry or deported.
  • At Hindu kovils, the same modesty rules apply. At some, such as Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in Jaffna, men are expected to remove their shirts before entering.
  • At mosques, women should cover their hair as well as their arms and legs, and everyone removes their shoes.

Festivals and holidays in November 2026

Two public holidays fall in November 2026, both confirmed in the government's 2026 holiday calendar.

  • Deepavali — Sunday 8 November. The Hindu festival of lights, celebrated by Sri Lanka's Tamil community with oil lamps, new clothes and sweets. It is most visible in Jaffna, in Colombo's Wellawatte and Kotahena, and on the hill-country tea estates. If you are invited into a home or kovil, modest, bright clothing is welcome.
  • Il Full Moon Poya — Tuesday 24 November. Like every full-moon day, it is a Buddhist holiday. Temples are crowded with people dressed in white, sales of alcohol and meat are banned for the day, and many bars close or serve only soft drinks. Plan a temple visit, dress conservatively, and don't expect a beach party.

November packing list

  • 4–6 loose cotton or linen tops, including one long-sleeved shirt
  • 2 pairs of light trousers or long skirts (temple-ready), plus shorts for the beach
  • A sarong or large scarf: a temple cover-up, beach wrap and train blanket in one
  • A fleece or jumper and a breathable rain jacket for the hills
  • Grippy sandals and one pair of closed walking shoes
  • Compact umbrella, dry bag or zip-lock bags for your phone
  • Swimwear and a beach cover-up
  • Insect repellent: mosquitoes are busier after rain
  • Leech socks, if you plan to walk in Sinharaja, the Knuckles or Horton Plains

Frequently asked questions

Is November a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

It is a shoulder month. Rain is likely everywhere because of the second inter-monsoon, but it mostly falls in afternoon storms, prices are lower than in December, and the island is very green. It suits travellers focused on the hill country and cultural sites, with a south-coast finish late in the month.

Which side of Sri Lanka is best in November?

Neither coast is fully dry. The south and southwest improve through the month and are the better choice by late November, while the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay is entering its rainy season.

What should I wear in Sri Lanka in November?

Loose, quick-drying cotton or linen for the hot, humid lowlands; a fleece and a rain jacket for Nuwara Eliya and Ella; and long trousers or a long skirt plus a scarf to cover shoulders and knees at temples.

Can I swim in the sea in November?

On the south coast, increasingly yes as the month goes on, but swim only at beaches where locals swim and heed red flags. Seas on the west coast can still be rough, and the east coast is entering its monsoon.

What happens on Poya day in November 2026?

Il Full Moon Poya falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026. It is a public holiday: temples are busy, alcohol and meat sales are banned, and many bars close. Dress modestly, ideally in white or light colours, if you visit a temple.
